CRAIG JESSOP AND MACK WILBERG, CONDUCTORS, MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA AT TEMPLE SQUARE; "Then Sings My Soul" (Mormon Tabernacle Choir) ****

In the past several years, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been prolific in the recording studio, frequently releasing more than one album each year. With predominantly sacred and spiritual works, these CDs have explored the musical roots of the choir.

The current album, "Then Sings My Soul," continues along the same path. It contains many well-known hymns, performed as only the Tabernacle Choir can — with deep-rooted spirituality and sublime sincerity.

Of the 18 selections, particular mention must be made of "The Lord's Prayer" and "Abide With Me, 'Tis Eventide," sung by the choir with heartfelt feeling. Also notable is John Rutter's "I Will Sing With the Spirit," whose lighthearted joy the choir captures with simple eloquence.

With director Craig Jessop and associate director Mack Wilberg, the Tabernacle Choir has two of the most talented and dedicated choral conductors in the country. They direct the choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square, which ably accompanies the singers, with an articulateness that underscores the ensemble's radiant lyricism and expressiveness.

"Then Sings My Soul" is a wonderful addition to anyone's choral collection. The album can be enjoyed for the inspiration it brings, as well as for the sheer beauty of the singing.
