Stampede's in full swing in West Jordan
Eee-haw?
Eee-yeah! It's stampede time in West Jordan, when buckaroos and buckarettes saddle up for a thunderin' good time at West Jordan City Park. The annual West Jordan Western Stampede celebration began with a parking lot dance Wednesday night and continues Thursday through Saturday with a carnival, a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo and fireworks show each night.
There will also be daily entertainment Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 7:30 p.m.
Pre-rodeo entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. nightly, followed by the annual rodeo at 8 p.m. at the West Jordan Rodeo Grounds.
Three large fireworks shows sponsored by the Dannon Co. will follow the rodeo each evening.
On July 4, the festivities will begin with a flag ceremony at 7 a.m. and a 5K run at 8 a.m. The entry fee for the run will be $13, and runners need to sign up at the park entrance on 2200 West at 6:30 a.m.
The local Rotary Club will host a chuckwagon breakfast 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the West Jordan High School parking lot at 8136 S. 2700 West.
Food will be served until 10:30 a.m. when the annual Western Stampede Parade will leave the high school and head north on 2700 West.
The procession will swing east on 7800 South and turn into the city park on 1925 West.
Carnival rides, entertainment and special events including an antique tractor pull and a watermelon-eating contest will run through the afternoon.
And an 8 p.m. square dance will be held in the Main Park Bowery.
The celebration will wind up Sunday with a community interfaith event at Copper Hills High School, 5445 W. New Bingham Highway, at 7 p.m.
John Covey will speak on the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families."
