Free Fishing Day promises best fishing of year
MAYBEY POND: Fishing slow to fair. Anglers report catching catfish using night crawlers and rainbow using PowerBait.
EAST CANYON: Fishing good for smallmouth bass and trout. Anglers reported catching smallmouth near Taylor Hallow using a variety of tube jigs. Shore anglers reported success using worm with marshmallow or PowerBait. Boat anglers reported success trolling with pop gear trailed with worms or triple-teaser tipped with a worm.
ECHO: Fishing fair to good. Anglers reported good success on the rocks just to the east side of the dam. Yellow, orange, and green sparkle PowerBait off the bottom is producing some success.
HYRUM: Fishing fair for rainbow. Anglers using bait have reported the best success.
LOCOMOTIVE SPRINGS: Fishing fair. Anglers reported the best success in the morning hours using worms and salmon eggs.
MANTUA: Fishing fair to good for bass, bluegill and perch. Shore and boat anglers reported good success for six- to seven-inch bluegill. Success using PowerBait and worms.
PINEVIEW: Fishing fair for smallmouth bass. Anglers have reported catching some crappie and tiger musky. Crappie and bass are moving into the shallows to spawn.
ROCKPORT: Fishing fair to good. Boat fishermen reported slow to fair action trolling with pop gear/bait and spinners. Most shore fishermen reported good success with bait. Green PowerBait and worms seem to produce the best results.
WILLARD BAY: Fishing good for walleye, fair for wipers. Anglers reported some success using clown colors and perch colors. Trolling at 3.3 to 4 mph on the west side and toward the island has also shown results.
STRAWBERRY: Fair to good success. One angler reports catching and releasing more than 60 fish per trip by using pointer minnows in under 10 feet of water. Black Woolly Buggers or jigs, minnow-imitating lures and traditional baits have been other popular methods.
