Utah was easy pick for Robles

Griff Robles said it was a "very easy decision" to give an early commitment to the University of Utah. The Spanish Fork High quarterback, a senior-to-be, chose the Utes over an offer from Arizona.

"I feel Utah is a great program," Robles said. "They're going in the right direction, and they're doing all they can to get where they want to be — winning football games. That's the place for me."

Robles, who has led the Dons to back-to-back title in the Ute Shoot summer program, plans to serve an LDS Church mission after graduation, then join the Utes for the 2009 season. He is 6-foot-3 1/2 and weighs 210 pounds.

ALL-AMERICAN: Senior defensive back Eric Weddle has picked up another preseason All-American honor — adding Athlon Sports to The Sporting News accolades.

"Every honor or accolade he is getting now is well deserved. He's earned it by his play on the field," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "It's not hype. It's not reputation. It's what he'd done on the field.

"Eric Weddle has out on tape the right to become a preseason All-American and all those things that are coming with it," he added.

EXTRA POINTS: Utah's Sept. 30 homecoming game against Boise State will kick off at 1 p.m. ... Ute football season-ticket renewals reached 28,723 ... Summer conditioning began Monday ... Safety Casey Evans, offensive tackle Tavo Tupola and return specialist Brent Casteel were named to Athlon's All-Mountain West Conference first team. Quarterback Brett Ratliff, defensive tackle Kelly Talavou and defensive end Martail Burnett were second teamers.
