A matter for states — not Constitution

• An ABC News poll found that while 58 percent of Americans said same-sex marriages should be against the law, 51 percent said the matter should be dealt with by the states rather than through the Constitution.

• The poll conducted May 31-June 4 shows the amendment proposal has majority support from the self-described conservatives — 56 percent — and Evangelical Protestants — 72 percent — who make up the core of the Republican Party's base of support.
