3 varied TV Western series galloping onto DVD

Three decidedly different Western series from the '50s and '60s lead off this collection of TV-to-DVD releases that will be on store shelves Tuesday.

"Cheyenne: The Complete First Season" (Warner, 1955-56, not rated, b/w, $39.98, five discs). This is the more traditional Western of these three, with Clint Walker as the imposing but soft-spoken title character, a drifter, sometime Scout and occasional gunslinger.

Walker is a bit stiff in early episodes but becomes more natural as the show progresses. Lots of scenic outdoor action. Comic sidekick L.Q. Jones disappears after a few episodes, and James Garner is in three — as three different characters (the last one named "Bret" but not "Maverick"; that came later). Guest stars also include Rod Taylor and a very young Dennis Hopper . . . as "The Utah Kid."

Extras: Full frame, 15 episodes, new featurettes (built around a new interview with Walker), subtitle options (English, French, Spanish), chapters.

"The Wild Wild West: The Complete First Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1965-66, not rated, b/w, $54.99, seven discs). This delightful tongue-in-cheek show is a sort of cowboy James Bond, and it holds up well, with James T. West (Robert Conrad) as a special agent for President Ulysses S. Grant, aided by master of disguise Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin), often battling arch-villain Dr. Loveless (Michael Dunn). Guest stars include Suzanne Pleshette (in the pilot), Leslie Nielsen, Katharine Ross, Martin Landau, Burgess Meredith and Don Rickles.

Extras: Full frame, 28 episodes, audio introductions/commentaries (by Conrad), featurettes, audio interviews, lost original opening, network promos, music-scoring sessions, photo gallery, optional English subtitles, chapters.

"F-Troop: The Complete First Season" (Warner, 1965-66, not rated, b/w, $39.98, six discs). This comedy in the "Gilligan's Island" vein concentrates on the residents of Fort Courage after the Civil War. Ken Berry is the bumbling captain, Forrest Tucker is the scheming sergeant and Larry Storch is Tucker's sidekick. Guests include Don Rickles, George Gobel, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Edward Everett Horton as medicine man Roaring Chicken! Silly but enjoyable if you're in the mood.

Extras: Full frame, 34 episodes, subtitle options (English, French, Spanish), chapters.

"NCIS: The Complete First Season" (CBS/Paramount, 2003-04, not rated, $68.99, six discs). Mark Harmon stars in this Navy police procedural, a sort of military "CSI" or "Law & Order." He heads up an investigative team that operates independently and is occasionally globetrotting as it solves crimes and tackles terrorism.
