War flicks just for dad
'Patton' and 'Tora!' are some of DVDs out for Father's Day
These war films have been released on DVD just in time for Father's Day because dads are all about battles and explosions. I guess.
Still, most are good choices led by four exceptional reissued double-disc DVDs, and including a number of films that have never been on home video.
"Patton"
(Fox, 1970, PG, $19.98, two discs). George C. Scott embodies Gen. George S. Patton in this great biographical film, with great support from Karl Malden as Gen. Omar Bradley. Winner of seven Oscars (including Scott, who famously declined the award; best picture, screenplay and director). Extras: Widescreen, audio commentary/introduction (by co-screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola), making-of featurettes, photo galleries, audio essay on real-life Patton, trailer, language options (English, Spanish, French), subtitle options (English, Spanish), chapters.
"The Dirty Dozen"/"The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" (Warner, 1967/1985, not rated, $26.99, two discs). The first is alternately hilarious and thrilling as Lee Marvin corrals thugs and misfits to perform a dangerous World War II mission. Unbeatable cast includes Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, John Cassevetes, Robert Ryan, Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, George Kennedy, Telly Savalas, Clint Walker, Trini Lopez, etc.
The second film is a lesser made-for-TV sequel with Marvin and Borgnine in a plot to assassinate Hitler.
Extras: Widescreen ("Dirty Dozen")/full frame ("Next Mission"), audio commentary (Brown, Lopez, others), introduction by Ernest Borgnine, new/vintage making-of featurettes, vintage Marine recruiting film (with Marvin), trailer, language options (English, French), subtitle options (English, French, Spanish), chapters.
"The Longest Day" (Fox, 1962, not rated, b/w, $19.98, two discs). Incredible cast re-creates D-Day in this three-hour epic: John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, Rod Steiger, etc.
Extras: Widescreen, audio commentaries, featurettes, TV special, photo gallery, trailer, language options (English, Spanish, French), subtitle options (English, Spanish), chapters.
"Tora! Tora! Tora!" (Fox, 1970, G, $19.98, two discs). Great re-creation of the bombing of Pearl Harbor (and events leading up to it) told from both American and Japanese viewpoints.
Extras: Widescreen, audio commentary, featurettes, TV special, photo gallery, trailer, language options (English, French), subtitle options (English, Spanish), chapters.
