Under the direction of Brady R. Allred, the University of Utah Singers has developed into one of the elite collegiate choirs in the country. The group sings with conviction, and no matter what they sing, it sounds natural and effortless.
The ensemble has a huge repertoire, ranging from Mozart to folk music. Allred elicits a dynamic performance from his singers; his interpretations are insightful; and the collaboration between director and singers is remarkably honed and refined. It is difficult to believe this is a student ensemble these young vocalists bring a high degree of professionalism to their performances.
All this is abundantly evident in the group's most recent CD, "Home on the Range." As the title implies, the album is a delightful slice of Americana. It includes a little bit of everything songs by Stephen Foster, folk tunes, spirituals and gospel music all sung with the ensemble's characteristic enthusiasm, energy and vocal integrity.
The arrangements are wonderful, and there is a nice blend of a cappella and accompanied singing, all of which showcases the collective talent of the choir.
Particularly impressive are the group's renditions of the traditional "Shenandoah," the folk song "The Water is Wide" and the gospel song "I Am His Child." The album is a must have for lovers of the fine art of choral singing. The CD is available for purchase through the University Singer's Web site at www.uofusingers.org
