Mike Jerman's May 11 response to my "My View" that appeared on May 9 misses my point. All I was trying to point out was that the use of a particular Census Bureau report that claims to provide a listing of state and per-capita spending on higher education is inaccurate since it also includes federal grants and tuition at least for Utah.
Mr. Jerman's point about whether or not per-capital data should be used in preference to percent of personal income is a fair one and deserves debate, but it wasn't my issue.
We both agree that accurate information must be the basis of any policy debate.
Richard E. Kendell
Commissioner of higher education
