He lauded Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a woman "whose power and talent are transforming our world," in both large and small ways. Rice agreed to serve as an accompanist at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for an LDS soloist afflicted with a rare disease, knowing her participation would draw much-needed public awareness and support.

People of high station attended, more than 100 news accounts were published and the goal was achieved. But beyond making the time to help, he said, "I watched her provide the beautiful accompaniment and then stay in the shadows to make sure the spotlight was on the vocalist."

Peterson said church members can also learn the lessons of friendship and outreach by carefully watching President Gordon B. Hinckley, whose gift for developing personal relationships has not only enriched his life but opened doors for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide.

When guests visit the First Presidency, "he always stands at the door to greet them as they enter," tells them it's an honor to meet them and thanks them for kindnesses extended to the church. "He does his homework," learning their credentials and marshaling his firsthand knowledge of their locales. He answers questions and discusses issues of interest to them, makes people comfortable, "and always extends an invitation for them to return."

Most of all, he is authentic, Peterson said. "He is never pretentious, just always himself."
