Up in flames

Left, firefighters walk toward a burning house in the 2200 East block of Lair Way. The fast-moving fire, complicated by exploding ammunition in the basement, forced them to pull back. Below, neighbors Dori Tidwell, left, and Nancy Cowie watch the conflagration in shock. The elderly homeowners escaped safely. A daughter and three grandchildren who also lived in the house were not home at the time. Surrounding roads were closed and Foothill Boulevard was backed up for at least an hour as fire hoses were dragged up the neighborhood streets. Officials said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
