The larger-than-life missionary may elicit jokes, but it brings in customers. Sales were up 40 percent over the same two-week period last year, Theobald said. And now that "Elder Buns" is back, he hopes the trend will continue.

Whoever snagged the blow-up missionary took him from his bed. Just like regular missionaries, "Elder Buns" hits the sack when the sun goes down. All the air is taken out of him following a long day. The display was attached to the roof with heavy nylon ropes, which the culprits simply cut to make off with the deflated cloth creation, Theobald said.

Anyone with similar thoughts in the future would have to bring some serious bolt cutters, as the ropes have given way to metal cables and locks.

The elder is now back safe and sound, and Orem investigators didn't even have to break a sweat — although they had been on the lookout.

The inflatable figure is unique, so if it had turned up in someone's bedroom or back yard, it would have been easily identified, Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards said.

Theobald said he is more amused than upset by the missionary's adventure. He does have a suggestion, however:

"If people want to use it for a (missionary) homecoming, it's fine," Theobald said. "Just ask permission — please don't steal it off the roof."
