He noted that most of those involved, including the choir members and the Orchestra at Temple Square, are volunteers who "give of their time in a consecrated, beautiful and wonderful manner, and in doing so, bring great credit to the church, the state of Utah and this great nation."

More than "America's choir," President Hinckley said, "they have sung internationally all across the world and will continue to do so."

Music has been a fundamental part of worship among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its earliest days, he said, noting that a choir was formed for the dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1836. The hymn "The Spirit of God Like a Fire is Burning" was first sung on that occasion and has been repeatedly a part of historic events in the church.

"That marvelous and inspirational number has become a signature of this remarkable organization," whose broadcasts will "hopefully go on forever and ever, increasing in quality and beauty and providing inspiration and spirituality to the masses of the world," he said.

Hatch said, "You cannot listen to the choir sing without feeling to the depth of your soul its majesty and power. It has stirred feelings of patriotism in every corner of the world and in America in particular." Holding up a document of formal recognition for the choir by the U.S. Senate, he said, "May God continue to bless the Mormon Tabernacle Choir."

Huntsman praised the group "on behalf of the state of Utah . . . for representing our state so prominently and proudly throughout the world."
