Elma G. Farnsworth, 97, the wife of the creator of television, died early Thursday in Bountiful.

Mrs. Farnsworth was raised on a farm in Vernal until her parents moved the family to Provo. Pem, as she was called, met Philo T. Farnsworth during her sophomore year in high school. They were engaged on her birthday in February 1926 and married three months later.

Mrs. Farnsworth was present in San Francisco the night electronic television was first demonstrated. Hers was one of the first photographs transmitted by a cathode-ray-tube, invented by her husband.

Since Philo Farnsworth passed away in 1971, she has worked hard to preserve his legacy, even landing his face on a 20-cent postage stamp in 1983. She authored a book, "Distant Vision," published in 1990 about her life with Philo.

Mrs. Farnsworth died of natural causes and had been in declining health for some time. Funeral arrangements are pending
