Elder Russell M. Nelson's call for a constitutional amendment about marriage will not be well-received by many devoted and active members of the LDS Church who have gay friends and family. Must a line be drawn at the Utah border before the Deseret Morning News would feel comfortable enough to ask the question: How do everyday Mormons, everyday Utahns and everyone in between feel about the proposed amendment?
I don't need a newspaper to tell me how Scott McCoy or Gayle Ruzicka will come down on an issue like this. I need a newspaper that gets right down to the difficulty and complexity of an issue that is clearly no slam-dunk.
Just because the LDS Church clearly is not a democracy shouldn't allow anyone especially journalists to pretend that no genuine controversy can ever exist within and among its membership.
