A man died after being Tasered multiple times while running from police Friday night.
Witnesses said the man, who is believed to have an extensive criminal history, started running from police the moment he saw them, near 1300 West and 350 South. It is unknown whether he had outstanding warrants, said Salt Lake City police detective Robin Snyder.
Police deployed a Taser to stop the man, which caused him to collapse, and he later stopped breathing, Snyder said. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he died.
Snyder said police Internal Affairs, the District Attorney's Office and the homicide division will investigate the incident. The officer involved was placed on routine administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
