Twenty years ago, I needed another English class to graduate from BYU. I chose a poetry class, because it was spring, I suppose. It was the best business decision I ever made. Leslie Norris, the gentle, kindly poet from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, taught me poetry and honesty. "Write so your own mother will recognize you," he counseled. That counsel got me my first job as I learned how to write a cover letter that both my mother and employer liked.
I thanked him on Wednesday from the back row of his funeral service. Once again, my children and I are the beneficiaries of this dying generation of giants. It leaves us challenged to measure up.
