Trevor Odom, an operations manager for Best Buy, 309 E. University Parkway, said he noticed the change on the cash register as he rang people up on Monday. The responsibility of managing sales-tax numbers rests in Minneapolis with the corporate headquarters — not in Orem, he said.

But Christensen believes information about any sales-tax change should have come directly from the city.

Saturday and Monday are the two busiest days for the Orem health food store, and she estimated they sold about $15,000 — at the old tax rate of 6.25 percent. With the new, required 6.35 percent, the company will end up paying the difference at the end of the month.

Like Good Earth, Ken Garff Nissan of Orem also didn't know to charge the extra tax.

"I think it's frustrating because it's poor communication," said Ed Allen, business manager for the Orem dealership, 285 W. University Parkway. "I believe it's putting us in a bad position to notify the consumers."

Allen said they have sold five cars since Saturday — and he's glad business wasn't better.

"We pay our taxes religiously," Allen said. "We're concerned about making sure it's correct. If they want it to be correct, they've got to tell us. Am I frustrated? Yeah. I don't know what else to be."
