The Intermountain Power Project has shut down a 950-megawatt generating unit for scheduled maintenance.

A spokeswoman for the plant said the Unit 2 generator will be down for the entire month of April. There are two 950-megawatt units at the Millard County site.

IPP is Utah's largest coal-fired power plant and sells 75 percent of its electricity to six California cities. Los Angeles is entitled to 45 percent of the plant's generation.

Gregg Fishman, a spokesman for the California Independent System Operator, which operates about 80 percent of California's high-voltage power grid, said the shutdown will not have any impact on California.

"This is a fairly low-load period of time," Fishman said. "There are other units available that we can bring on."
