West High School's chess team captured four of the top five individual places and amassed 29.5 team points from its top five players en route to winning the Utah State High School Chess Championship 4A division.
Skyline took first place in the 5A division with 22.5 points from its top five players, and Ben Lomond took first place in the 1A/2A/3A division with 18.5 points from its top four players.
Ninety-three students from 23 schools throughout the state participated in the seven-round, two-day tournament held March 24 and 25 at Granite High School.
Tyler McIntosh, East, and Jason Mielke, West, tied for tournament individual co-champions with 6.5 points. Devon Brown, Jamie Olsen-Mills and Thomas Goller, all of West High, tied for third place with 6.0 points. Goller was also named Speed Chess Champion.
