DALLAS— Mavericks forward Keith Van Horn will be sidelined indefinitely with a broken right hand.

Van Horn, the former University of Utah star, was injured during the Mavericks' 108-99 loss Friday night when he jammed his hand on the ball while attempting to make a steal. He is averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 20.4 minutes per game.

Surgery will be performed to repair a broken bone between the wrist and the base of the thumb once swelling subsides.

Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said there was no timetable for Van Horn's return. With less than three weeks remaining in the regular season, it's unlikely that Van Horn would be available for the playoffs.

"He's out for an extended period of time," Johnson said. "We've lost an important part of our rotation."

ROSE, MARBURY OUT: Injured starters Jalen Rose and Stephon Marbury sat out New York's game against Philadelphia on Sunday, while Steve Francis dressed but was not in the starting lineup. Marbury did not play because of his injured left knee. He left Friday's game against Philadelphia in the first quarter and an MRI exam Saturday revealed a strained left patella tendon. Coach Larry Brown said he did not expect Marbury to miss the rest of the season and listed the point guard as day-to-day.

"There were structural problems," Brown said of the MRI results. "It's just a matter of what he can tolerate."

Rose was out because of plantar fasciitis of the left foot and a sore right knee. He will have an MRI today.

"He has plantar fasciitis and that's never anything that anybody's comfortable with," Brown said. "He said that's been troubling him for a while and I think that may have caused the knee (injury)."

Francis didn't play in Friday's loss at New York because of a sprained toe on his right foot.
