Darts, Dons take titles
Davis boys, Spanish Fork girls outrun their foes
The Dons, defending 4A girls state champs, showed why they are the early favorite for this year's 5A title with a convincing win over both talented Davis and Bingham.
Meanwhile, Davis' boys were paced by Alex Hill's two first-place finishes to take the team title over Lone Peak and Bingham.
Despite a steady rain, lots of wind and even mixtures of snow about halfway through the meet, several athletes had outstanding efforts and a number qualified for next month's state championships to be held at BYU.
Hill took firsts in the 100 meters and javelin, was seventh in the 200 meters and helped Davis to a fifth-place finish in the 400 relay. Judge Memorial's Colin Boevers was also a double winner, taking the shot put and discus. His 174-5 throw in the discus was voted outstanding performance, earning 948 points on the event equivalency scale.
Spanish Fork was led by Natalie Stewart's four victories in the 100, 200, 400 and as anchor in the 400 relay. Sister Nachelle finished just behind her in both the 200 and 400. And when older sister Diane returns from an off-season injury, the Dons should be as strong as they were a year ago when they ended Mountain View's long string of state titles. Both schools were moved up in classification to 5A this year.
Davis hurdler Ashlee Cannon took both hurdle races, while teammates Alayna Ferrin and Kelsey Eller won the discus and javelin, respectively. Other first place winners in track events were Kim Quinn of Bingham in the 3200, Chelsea Loss of Spanish Fork in the 1600 and Sarah Yingling of Mountain View in the 800. Kristi Carpenter of Lone Peak won the high jump, and Rock Springs' Amanda Rollins made the long bus trip worth it with a throw of 40-0 in the shot put, capturing outstanding meet performance.
The wet conditions hurt attendance at the meet, the first large state qualifier of the season. Next week's schedule calls for the Davis County Invite at Viewmont on Wednesday and Thursday, and then smaller state qualifiers at Manti, Logan and Timpanogos highs. A few athletes will also travel to Arcadia, Calif., for a western regional meet.
