The University of Utah has received a $50,000 gift to establish three renewable scholarships for Chicano students.
The Ibarra Foundation, created by Utah brothers David and Mickey Ibarra, established two four-year scholarships to be given to freshmen in the amount of $5,000 per year. A two-year scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior, at $5,000 annually. "Investing in the future success of our Latino community by making a college education possible for well-qualified students is our goal," said David Ibarra.
The first scholarship winners will be announced May 9 at a banquet held by the university's Chicano Scholarship Fund.
The fund was started in 1973 by a group of Chicano community leaders in collaboration with university students, staff and faculty. It has provided financial support to more than 300 students. For more information, visit: www.chicano.utah.edu.
