Winner: Museum curators probably harbor dreams of finding treasures hidden in attics. That dream came true for the Utah Museum of Natural History recently when it acquired a collection of Native American jewelry, rugs, baskets and dolls purchased between the 1950s and the '90s. The carefully stored collection was accumulated by Dorothy Haslam, whose dying wish was that her family keep it intact.
The museum will be showing the collection today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Loser: Everyone makes mistakes, but few of them cost $6,754,275.36. That's the value an investigation put on a mishap at Hill Air Force Base last October. A worker there pulled a pin from a jet's landing gear, then lost it as one of the jet's engines sucked it out of his hand. That is known as a bad day at work.
Winner: The University of Utah women's basketball team qualified for the Sweet 16 this week in the annual NCAA championship tournament. That makes the Utes the most successful of the state's postseason entrants this year. The ladies did it by coming from behind to beat Arizona State University.
Unfortunately, the competition doesn't get any easier from here. The Utes play Boston College tonight in Albuquerque. The Eagles got there by upsetting top-seeded Ohio State. But no matter what happens, Utahns should be proud of this hard-working team.
