Gymnastics: Utah retains No. 2 ranking

With its best road score of the season last Friday at Florida, the University of Utah retained its second-place standing in the NCAA women's gymnastics rankings this week, actually moving a touch close to No. 1 Georgia.

The Utes (10-2) have a Regional Qualifying Score of 196.595 to Georgia's 197.255. Georgia had the same RQS last week, while Utah's March 12 RQS was 196.425.

BYU remained ranked No. 23 but raised its RQS from 194.185 to 194.45. Southern Utah moved up from 33rd to 25th, but Utah State dropped from 34th to 37th this week.

In events, the Utes remained second on bars, third on beam and ninth on floor but dropped from second to fourth on vault. BYU is 16th on beam, 24th on bars, and SUU is 23rd on bars, 25th on floor.

Individually, the fall Ute Nicolle Ford had at Florida dropped her from 11th to 13th among all-arounders with Ashley Postell 15th. Postell ranks third on beam, Utah's highest-rated eventer.

BYU is at Utah Friday night at 7 in the regular-season finale for both teams. Utah State hosts Southern Utah and the rest of the Western Athletic Conference in the WAC championships Friday at 6 p.m. SUU and USU are completing their first year of competition in that league.
