The Irish have always been known for their gift of gab — as well as for their love of drink. Many of the oft-repeated blessings you hear began as toasts. But they have become well-wishes that are shared in abundance, especially at this time of year.

Among our favorites:

• May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future.

• May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.

• May you be in heaven a half-hour before the devil knows you are dead.

• May the light always find you on a dreary day,

When you need to be home, may you find your way.

May you always have courage to take a chance

And never find frogs in your underpants.
