Deb Sawyer, the focus of the March 9 Free Lunch column, says she trains teachers how to incorporate the teachings of Gandhi into history and geography lessons. How can you incorporate philosophy into fact-based curricula? Will all leaders, warriors and artists of the past be measured against Gandhi, with the teacher pointing out the failings of those who didn't live up to the philosophy of a man who may have lived hundreds of years later?
Gandhi's philosophy should only be applied to those who have been proven to have been influenced by him, lest the teacher be teaching nonviolence and less history, and they aren't being paid to teach nonviolence.
