Deb says children enjoy learning about "that cool little bald guy" who tirelessly spread the message that "an eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind." They sit up and pay attention when she tells how Gandhi endured serious beatings rather than resort to violence, and when Deb recalls her favorite scene from "Gandhi," the movie: "I am Moslem, I am Hindu, I am Christian and I'm a Jew — and so are you," Gandhi tells a Hindu man who is angry at him for supporting Moslems.

"I love that," says Deb. "It's simple, but it really helps people catch Gandhi's vision."

Still, it hasn't always been easy to get that message across.

Deb laughs as she recalls the day her conservative son complained that his sister, Kimberly, wouldn't fight with him.

"She said I have to be nice because you're all in the peace movement!" Jason grumbled.

Deb sips her tea and smiles: "It's quite the dilemma for him, isn't it? I guess you'd have to say he's outnumbered in our house."
