The Utah Transit Authority this morning unveiled the name of its first commuter rail system: "FrontRunner."

The name was selected to distinguish the commuter rail from TRAX, a light-rail system that operates within Salt Lake County. "FrontRunner" also correlates well with "Wasatch Front," said UTA General Manager John Inglish.

"The name will become synonymous with speed, movement and reliability, as commuter rail is first constructed from Weber County to Salt Lake City," Inglish said.

By early 2008, UTA plans to open a 44-mile segment of commuter rail from Weber County to Salt Lake City. The transit agency wants to eventually extend commuter rail north into Brigham City and south to Payson.

Work on the Weber to Salt Lake segment is about 20 percent complete.
