WASHINGTON The Senate this June will consider an effort by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to change the Constitution to give Congress the power to prohibit flag desecration, Hatch's office announced Tuesday.
The information is based on a schedule from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
The House of Representatives approved the amendment in June 2005. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, and Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, voted in favor of the amendment. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, voted against it.
Hatch's amendment reads: "The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."
Hatch's office said the amendment would not ban flag desecration, such as burning, but would allow Congress to prohibit that if it wanted to.
