Rock on ...

Surveying the Field

Must there be a coaching vacancy around here every year?

Now it's Weber State looking for a basketball coach.

Which means, of course, it's time for the early Rock On odds:

Rick Majerus (1,000-1). No way. Unless a Ruth's Chris Steak House opens in Ogden.

Kerry Rupp (500-1). He coached under Majerus at Utah, then at Indiana under Mike Davis, who resigned under pressure. That's good on a resume, but it's also a lot of baggage.

Tony Ingle (100-1). Ex-BYU assistant won a Division II national championship at Kennesaw State. But in the Owls' first year as a D-I school, they went just 12-17. Sometimes less is more.

Ron Abegglen (50-1). Popular and successful in previous stint as Wildcats' coach, but a return would mean we'd have to learn to spell his name all over again.

Tommy Connor (20-1). Westminster coach is young, bright and successful. Best of all, he's no relation to Jimmy (Connors). If he were related to Chuck "The Rifleman" Connors, they'd be dumb not to hire him immediately.

Jeff Judkins (10-1). BYU women's coach has turned the program around. His best selling point to Weber State: Our women can beat your men.

Gordon Chiesa (5-1). Former Jazz assistant and head coach at Providence would be a nice fit. If only the Jersey native can start saying "water" instead of "wohta."

Roger Reid (4-1). Snow College and former BYU coach is a Weber alumnus. Maybe he can bring his 9 million disappointed Mormon fans along with him.

Dick Hunsaker (2-1). His UVSC Wolverines beat Weber this year; they also beat ASU. On the other hand, who didn't?

Day of Celebration

Utah State and BYU agreed last week to start playing again in football.

So the old rivalry is back.

Just wondering, does that mean "Tequila Day" in Logan is back, too?

Do Not Touch

Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko's wife Masha told ESPN The Magazine she is allowing her hubby one extramarital dalliance a year.
