PHILADELPHIA — A father who took his underage daughter on an illegal driving lesson that left a woman dead was sentenced Monday to three years of probation.

Richard Miller was giving his 15-year-old daughter, who lacked a learner's permit, a driving lesson in an empty parking lot last April when she sped across a street and hurtled onto a lawn where a woman was playing with her 1-year-old daughter.

Sarah McGinley, 18, was killed, but tossed her baby to safety.

Prosecutors said Miller's daughter hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. Miller said he tried unsuccessfully to push the brake pedal with his hands as the car surged toward McGinley.

Miller, 47, pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter.
