A man was arrested after police say he pistol-whipped a Club Manhattan patron.
Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Askerlund said the patron was leaving the club at 5 E. 400 South with friends about 1:42 a.m. Saturday when he was attacked by a man wielding a black semiautomatic handgun.
The man, 24, hit the victim about the head and face, and during the attack the gun discharged at least once, Askerlund said.
Patrons stepped in to stop the attack, and in the ensuing scuffle, some of the attacker's clothing was torn, one of his shoes came off and he fled south on foot.
He was arrested along 500 South by Salt Lake City gang officers, but he didn't have the gun, police said. Officers were unable to recover a gun, but they found a few shell casings, Askerlund said.
The victim was taken to LDS Hospital in serious condition, but he was expected to be treated for his injuries and released.
It is unknown if the two men were acquaintances or if the scuffle stemmed from an argument inside the club, Askerlund said.
The arrested man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on investigation of aggravated assault, according to jail booking logs. Bail was set at $50,000.
