A jury on Thursday convicted Deon Lomax Clopten, 30, of first-degree felony murder in connection with the 2002 shooting death of Tony Fuailemaa outside a downtown Salt Lake nightclub following a hip-hop concert.
After a five-day trial, the jury also found Clopten guilty of third-degree felony failure to respond to an officer's signal to stop and second-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person. However, the jury returned a not-guilty verdict for another charge, second-degree felony obstruction of justice.
Clopten, who is currently in prison for another unrelated matter, waived his right to be present for sentencing before 3rd District Judge Dennis Fuchs. No sentencing date has been set yet.
