PROVO — Provo police have released the name of the man who was found dead Wednesday in Rock Canyon.

Joseph Fifield, 27, from Spanish Fork, was found on a small hill beside the face of a climbing cliff, although with so many bruises and broken bones he was nearly unrecognizable, said Provo Police Capt. Rick Healey.

Fifield was not wearing any climbing gear. Officials continue to scour the mountain to look for personal belongings.

The incident is being considered an accident at this point, although the final declaration will be made by the medical examiner's office, Healey said.

The body had only been in the canyon for a day, because Fifield had been at his Spanish Fork home that morning, Healey said.
