5. The fashion connection. Where do companies get inspiration for the colors of paper and stickers they use? In many cases, off the fashion pages. "Fashion's a huge influence," said Making Memories' Mooney. "People want to create an environment that reflects their tastes and that includes what they wear." The company's Boho Chic includes a pink/purple/green Olivia line and an aqua/purple/green Lauren series that come in coordinating packets and pads and with matching alphabets, ribbons, lace and other materials. Boho Chic has also spread into handbags, key chains and home decor items that incorporate photo crafting, said Mooney.

All My Memories also has an Uptown Chic line of memory and accordion albums that coordinate with handbags (with photo slots), among other things.

"Coordination is the big thing," said Trenna Hartman, of Bo-Bunny, which is based in Layton. The firm has a line of silk flowers, stickers and ribbons that coordinate with papers. "Ribbon is huge, and coordinated ribbons are one of our top sellers."

6. Dogs and kids. Scrapbook suppliers are always on the outlook for new themes to tickle the fancy of scrapbook makers. Making Memories introduced a line that caters to pet owners. "We think pets are the next huge trend," says Mooney. "It's a $40 billion dollar industry. Pets are our other babies." So, for those who want to include them in scrapbooks, there are stickers, charms and other embellishments with cat and dog themes.

There are also numerous lines that feature babies — colors, motifs and designs that cater to the youngest set.

Scrapbooker Tami Nemelka, however, could not find much representation of the teens and tweens set, so she decided to start making her own. Scrimages, based in Syracuse, features die cuts and coordinating papers that are "humorous, hip expressions of today's styles, trends and attitudes."

The elongated figures feature sports, prom, driver's license, graduation and other parts of teens' lives. The tots line includes sports, holidays, vacations and other motifs. Her Sez-it-all line includes words and phrases popular with the teen set.

The designs work for mothers who are scrapbooking their kids, says Nemelka, "but senior books, done by high school seniors, have become the hot new thing." Her designs feature simple, clean lines, she says, because "sometimes it seems like we've forgotten why we do scrapbooks — for the pictures. We wanted to come up with something that complements the pictures."

7. Simplify, simplify. That same quest for simplification was evident throughout the craft show. While there is still plenty out there for people who can and want to spend a lot of time putting together pages, there are also increasing options for those who don't.
