From Deseret News archives:
Art show by faculty at UVSC opens Friday
All were created by full or part-time faculty employed in the Art and Visual Communications Department at Utah Valley State College, said spokeswoman Robin Despain. The museum is associated with the college.
The faculty art show is the first the museum has held under its new director, Marcus Alan Vincent, but faculty shows are scheduled through 2008, she said.
Works include large-scale paintings by Hyunmee Lee, Catherine Downing and Vincent, who joined the faculty as a painting and drawing instructor this year.
Other artist-teachers include Mark Talbert, who will exhibit his works in ceramics.
Illustrations by Perry Stewart, Bob DeWitt and Jeff Bushman are also on display, along with photography by Simon Blundell, also new this year. Other photographic works along with graphic illustrations by Jim Godfrey and Travis Lovell will be on display. Teacher Susan Parkinson will also show her work.
Adjunct instructors Lee Cowan, Kent Wing, Nancy Steele-Makasci, Jackie Brethen and Jane Bush will exhibit a variety of pieces in mixed forms, media and styles.
After taking the test several times Cowan threw out the notion but created a series of paintings based on the results of those tests.
Photography instructor Blundell will display four images, including a mixed-media piece that combines photography with paint. The paint builds up the surface to depict time and space, he said.
His other images are photographic collages created through the use of digital photography and Photoshop computer software.
"I like the ability that Photoshop allows me to control the way the photos interact," he said.
The software allows him to manipulate images that are transparent or opaque, resulting in a collage with unusual interactions between the photos. The concept behind the art symbolizes the way lives are fragmented with the inundation of media, he said.
A two-hour reception on Friday begins at 6 p.m. and will include music by teacher Steve Bule's live jazz band, who will also display volumes of art research, Despain said. Light refreshments will be served.
