OREM — Two pop singers will showcase their vocal and songwriting talents in an evening its sponsor calls a kind of "MTV unplugged on steroids."

"I say this because of the distinctive sounds from extensive use of hand drums and acoustics," says Dallan Rees of "Acoustic Tuesdays," which is presenting the evening in partnership with SCERA.

"Maren Ord is the featured artist, and BYU student Benton Paul will be her special guest. Both are exceptionally talented."

Ord, known for her rock-influenced pop sound, has become a much sought after artist in Canada, where she has several times won the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy award. She has also won several Pearl Awards.

Her debut album, "Waiting," was a hit with Canadian radio and video programmers, and the Juno Awards honored her with a nomination for best new artist. She teamed with Randy Bachman of The Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive for her subsequent CD, where he played an instrumental role as co-writer, guitarist and producer.

Speaking about Ord, Bachman said, "I've always considered myself first and foremost a songwriter. So for years I've had my ears open, looking for the perfect voice to sing some of the more rocking songs I've had the music for. I'm so glad I found Maren to work with. She has the most perfect voice. She has absolutely perfect intonation and control."

From the Las Vegas Weekly: "She is a more gifted musician than Alanis, sings a lot better than Michelle Branch and writes songs sharper than Pink and Avril combined."

"While there is still a large audience that will no doubt yet discover her, we have been pleased that so many people tell us they are excited that Maren is coming to the SCERA," says Adam Robertson, president and CEO.

Opening act Benton Paul, a BYU music major, released a CD in November called "The Wise and the Weak" and leans toward an inspirational pop sound with a touch of folk, said Rees.

He appeared at Fat, Dumb and Happy's in Provo where he sold out the room on Nov. 22, 2005. His songs are also available on podcast from Utah Out Loud.
