LINDON The Lindon City Council has approved a conditional-use permit for a biodiesel fuel production facility.
Indian Oil had previously been devoted to cleaning used engine oil at 1155 W. 135 South and recently requested the permit change in order to start producing the environmentally friendly soybean fuel.
Although the company has the OK from the city, it is still waiting on a few other permission slips and insurance figures before they can actually begin production, said John Taylor, a manager at Indian Oil.
The actual biodiesel production may take another month to get up and running, Taylor said, but they hope to be working on some machine modifications within the week.
The company hopes to produce around 300,000 gallons of fuel a year and will also continue recycling the used engine oil.
Biodiesel is produced from corn, soybeans or cotton seeds and is biodegradable, nonflammable and nontoxic. It is also cleaner burning and helps to lubricate diesel engines, Taylor said.
