Bishop George H. Niederauer was honored Wednesday by lawmakers for his service to the state as head of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City for the past 11 years.
"It has been a privilege to be here and it's very difficult to go," Bishop Niederauer told members of the state Senate after the reading of a citation honoring him from the Legislature and Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.
Bishop Niederauer, recently named archbishop of San Francisco, promised to pray for the welfare of lawmakers and other residents of what he called a "wonderful state" and asked that lawmakers also pray for him.
The 69-year-old is scheduled to be installed on Feb. 15 as archbishop of San Francisco. He was named to the position in December by Pope Benedict XVI.
