A statement by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued late Tuesday said the rededication of the Santiago, Chile Temple has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 12, in order to "give(s) contractors more time to complete finish work on the temple.
"President Hinckley hopes to preside at the rededication in Santiago," the statement said.
A spokesman for the church told the Deseret Morning News earlier this week that no one with the LDS Church's temple department would say why the ceremonies were being postponed, or whether it was because of President Hinckley's recent surgery.
The 95-year-old church leader had surgery late last month to remove a cancerous growth from his large intestine. He was originally scheduled to travel Feb. 25-26 for the temple rededication ceremony in Chile.
