Measure faces battle in Utah House over bonding

Sen. Ed Mayne, D-West Valley, supports bonding for U.S. 6, despite the "need" to build Mountain View to relieve congestion in his area, he said.

"We have our needs, but what we were elected to do is look at all the state's needs," Mayne said. "I think the two priorities are Highway 6 and Mountain View, and we've got to have an opportunity to put some money into those projects."

But House and Senate Republicans have taken an opposite tack, agreeing that bonding shouldn't be done when the state has record surpluses. An exception would be issuing bonds for $200 million for buildings at Utah State University and the University of Utah.

Chris Bleak, chief of staff for House Speaker Greg Curtis, gave the following statement Monday: "With all the projected revenue, we're not really in support of bonding."
