Davis High biology teacher Brooke Mueller received a grant last month aimed at beefing up her classes through advanced technology

To enhance classroom experience, 100 Percent For Kids, a foundation created by Utah credit unions, awarded Mueller $3,000 for a virtual dissection project.

Mueller will purchase an LCD projector and lab manuals to help her students feel more excited and receptive to learning.

Instead of using textbooks or a white board, Mueller can use the LCD projector to demonstrate and teach students about various bodily systems.

The projector also has the capability to download visual aids, animation and music from the Internet into a PowerPoint presentation, which is then projected onto the LCD projector and then viewed by the entire class.

Mueller kicked off the program last month by projecting a virtual dissection of the respiratory system of a fetal pig. During the class period, students took what they learned from the interactive PowerPoint presentation into the lab and dissected a fetal pig.

"The Internet is full of visual aids, animations and more, and by using this projector technology in the classroom, students will become involved and find that learning can be fun," said Mueller.

"We are so appreciative of the foundation for having interest in our students and for providing the means for us to carry out this project."

The foundation has awarded more than $3 million to schools in the past two years.

Any teacher in the Utah public school system, grades K-12, is eligible to apply for the grant. Those interested must submit grant applications for their specific needs, anything as simple as paper supplies or much more involved projects.
