LINDON — Oak Canyon Junior High School teacher Doug Andersen recently received the George F. Cram Company Award Scholarship at the 90th annual meeting of the National Council for Geographic Education in Birmingham, Ala.

In addition to the National Geographic education council, the award for teachers from kindergarten to high school seniors comes from the Cram company for exemplary classroom presentations.

A panel of professional geographers and geography educators select the winning teachers from around the nation.

Andersen's presentation was on "Incorporating Cultural Landscape in the Secondary School Geography Curriculum Utilizing Digital Resources in India and Nepal." He shared over 1,200 images, video clips and sound bits indexed and available for teacher use with ready-made lesson plans and teaching suggestions encouraging teacher adaptability and creativity.

He also serves on the Alpine School District's professional development committee.

CEDAR HILLS — Math teacher Patty Spigarelli has received the Karl Jones outstanding mathematics educator of the year award.

A 21-year classroom veteran, she teaches in a fifth-grade accelerated learning lab at Cedar Ridge Elementary. The Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics makes just one selection for the Karl Jones Award for Excellence in Elementary Mathematics Education each year.

Principals, superintendents and other educators recommend nominees.

PROVO — Franklin Elementary has scheduled its science fair for today and Friday.

The school usually has around 200 science fair projects from kindergarten to sixth grade, notes first-grade teacher Kristin Priddis.

"Between you and me, you can't beat a darling 5-year-old with a volcano for the front page of your paper," she said.

Fifth- and sixth-grade winners move on to the Provo School District Science Fair on Feb. 23 at Provo High. Winners from that contest go to the Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair at BYU on March 28.
