25 Utah schools to get free fruits, vegetables

Free fruit for Utah schools!

Twenty-five mostly low-income schools have been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, aimed at creating healthier school environments and combat childhood obesity.

The program is expected to affect more than 13,000 students, and deliver $1 million in fresh fruits and vegetables through classroom deliveries, free vending machines or kiosks, the Utah State Office of Education announced Friday.

Participating schools are: Centerville, Crestview, Leo J. Muir and Sunset elementaries in Davis District; Tabiona Elementary in Duchesne; Book Cliff Elementary in Emery; Heartland Elementary in Jordan; Liberty Elementary and Riverview Junior High in Murray; Moroni Elementary in North Sanpete District; Ben Lomond and Ogden high schools, Highland Middle and Lewis Elementary in Ogden; McPolin Elementary in Park City; Rich High and Rich Middle schools; Backman, Jackson, Mountain View, Nibley Park, North Star and Riley elementaries and Bryant Middle School in Salt Lake City; and Lakeview Elementary in Weber.
