Growing bakery moving to West Valley

WEST VALLEY CITY — Although the aroma of its sweet-smelling pastries and breads has filled the air of Sugar House for years, Durrant's Crown Bakery will be relocating to West Valley City to accommodate its growing business.

"We feel we can be more efficient, improve our product and increase our business," said Donald Durrant, company president.

Donald's son Will Durrant shares ownership in the company with his brother and three sisters.

Will said they already have businesses lined up to buy from them when they move.

Donald said their bakery is popular primarily because of the product it puts out.

"A lot of bakeries only produce bread when we manufacture almost everything in the bakery line," Donald said.

He said they sell to convenience stores, downtown hotels and sandwich shops.

"We go to St. George and as far north as Logan and from Heber to Tooele," Donald said.

They also sell product out of state.

Among states receiving their baked goods is North Carolina, Donald said.

Although they have been located in Sugar House for 12 years, Will said they needed more space.

"We've had to put business on hold for as long as a year because of the lack of capacity," Will said.

Donald believes that with more space the business will progress in several areas.

It has been the Durrants' goal to satisfy their clientele since they opened the bakery.

"We've created 50 to 60 secret recipes designed to fit the needs of our customers," Donald said. "Some have taken as long as five years to develop."

Will said his family bought the bakery in 1985 from Danish Crown Bakery in Murray.

Will said they were a retail business for 10 years before they switched to wholesale.

"It has been really good for us," he said.

Donald has been in the bakery business for 50 years. It started in his youth when a baker told his mother he was looking for some help and she said her son needed a job.

"I've been doing it ever since," he said.

Donald loves his job as a baker.

"There is some pride in the product and knowing that people enjoy it," he said.

Will said he enjoys working for the bakery because he likes the freedom as an owner.

"I like the independence of owning my own business," Will said.

Ron Weibel, principle planner, said the bakery will be located at 6055 West and approximately 5500 South. The property is adjacent to residential property.

Steven Warr, architect of the project, said they'll be moving sometime in June.

He said the building is being constructed on 2 to 3 acres of property and the building will be 30,000 square feet.
