LEHI — A former Lehi police officer shot his ex-wife's boyfriend after a dangerous car chase Friday before police shot and arrested him, police said.

During an incident that started about 9:30 a.m., Art Henderson chased Natalie Henderson and her boyfriend Craig Trimble in his pickup, then rammed their vehicle when it stopped at about 950 W. 1500 North in front of Natalie Henderson's parents' house, Lehi Police Sgt. Darren Paul said.

Henderson approached the vehicle on foot and used a handgun to shoot Trimble while Trimble sat in the driver's seat, Paul said.

The bullet entered Trimble's abdomen, traveled downward through his body and exited his leg. Trimble and Natalie Henderson fled toward the house and Henderson allegedly shot Trimble a second time, in the leg.

Henderson's attention swung up the street when Lehi police officers Tim Hunsaker, Dave Boss and Alma Owens arrived on the scene, Paul said.

The ex-wife and Trimble were able to run to a nearby home.

Henderson exchanged gunfire with police, and Henderson was struck in the leg.

Neither injury was life threatening, Paul said. Henderson was taken to American Fork Hospital and a helicopter ambulance transported Trimble to a Salt Lake area hospital. At least two police vehicles were struck by bullets.

Boss said a ricochet struck him in the foot, but Paul said it appeared the bullet did not enter his shoe or injure him.

Paul said Henderson and his wife had a history of domestic problems that were known to Lehi Police.

Then-Lehi Police Chief Chad Smith fired Henderson in July 2004 after Henderson was charged with simple assault in June 2004.

A justice court jury convicted Henderson of the charge in March 2005, according to court documents.
