Utah illustrators get some new respect in a new Bountiful/Davis exhibition

Two paintings that will be enjoyed — especially if you're a baby boomer — are "Carnoustie 1953" and "Lord Byron 1945." These large gouache renderings of golf tournaments are a delight, both technically and thematically, and hark back to the photo-realist advertisements of the 1950s.

And don't miss Luch's paper sculpture "Noah's Spaceship." A 3-D illustration, the work sparks comments and awe for its craftsmanship.

According to Curtz, the illustration exhibits are always very popular, and this year's is proving no different. "If we do this again in 2007, which we might, we're looking at the possibility of making it a juried show."

This will make for a more exciting exhibit to be sure; there are myriad visionary, talented and young Utah illustrators that could finally finish off the myth that illustrators are inferior to fine artists.

Here's hoping.
