AAA provides software for teenage drivers

AAA of Utah is promoting a new interactive program to help teenage drivers learn to maneuver through different driving conditions.

The program is known as "Driver-ZED." With special software, teens can "test their skills" in rural and urban driving situations, through a roadwork zone or on the highway. The software is free for AAA members; nonmembers pay $7. Copies of the program will also be available in Utah high schools.

"Teen drivers are often inexperienced and overconfident," said Rolayne Fairclough, spokeswoman for AAA Utah, in a statement. "Driver-ZED is designed to help teens test their skills and prepare for potentially deadly driving situations before they face them for real on the road."

The Utah Highway Safety Office reports that teenage drivers are involved in more than 16 percent of traffic fatalities, according to Fairclough. During the legislative session, at least two bills are being proposed that deal with teenage drivers. One would allow teens to get a learner permit at age 15, allowing them a year to practice on the road. Another would forbid teens under age 17 from driving at night or with friends in the car.
