Trio charged in stabbing and car burglary
Clearfield man attacked as he interrupts crime
CLEARFIELD A man who confronted three car burglars Thursday was stabbed five times in the back by one of the men. Three men were arrested the same night in the attack.
All three, Alfrado Luciano Felan, 18; Shaheen Alavi Shafii, 22; and Justin Kyle McClain, 19, have been charged in 2nd District Court with first-degree felony aggravated robbery, second-degree felony aggravated assault and vehicle burglary, a class A misdemeanor, said Steve Major, deputy Davis County attorney.
All three are being held on $50,000 bail, and according to court records, these are the first felony charges ever for all three men.
The victim, 25-year-old Jerry Craven, of Clearfield, was about to leave with his girlfriend from the Heather Estates apartments at 25 E. 1800 South in Clearfield when he saw a man inside her car about 8:15 p.m. Two other men were standing near the car.
When Craven approached, the men walked away, said Clearfield Assistant Police Chief Greg Krusi.
Suspecting the men were burglarizing the car or trying to steal it, Craven approached the car and an argument and fight ensued, in which Craven, who is about 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds, began to get the upper hand, Krusi said.
Craven was delivering some payback when one of the men stabbed him so he and his companions could escape, according to the news release.
Amanda McGrath, who lives in the 156-apartment Heather Estates, said the neighborhood was quiet around the time of the incident. Suddenly, police cars began to swarm a nearby street and showed up in the parking lot. She watched as an ambulance arrived to care for Craven.
"It makes you wonder . . . if they're coming back," McGrath said. "I don't understand people."
Craven suffered two collapsed lungs, Major said. He was taken to Davis Hospital and then flown to Ogden Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The three men fled the area, but one of them dropped his hat, in which his name was written. Within three hours, police had tracked the trio to an Ogden address and arrested them, Krusi said.
Craven's girlfriend's car was taken as evidence, Krusi said, because Craven sat down in the passenger's seat after the fight and bled onto the seat. The borrowed rental car that police believe the three assailants drove was also taken as evidence.
In a statement to police, the three charged men said they went to the apartment complex to collect on a debt and, being opportunists, decided to steal the stereo from the girlfriend's car.
Felan, Shaheen and McClain all appeared in 2nd District Court Friday in front of Judge Rodney Page and were assigned public defenders. A preliminary hearing was set for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 1.
